Donald Trump Releases Family Leave Policy

Donald Trump unveiled his parenting policies on Tuesday, a series of proposals that were heavily influenced by his daughter, Ivanka.

The Trump policy mainly focuses on taxes as a way to lessen costs for families. The Earned Income Tax Credit will be extended to child care spending rebates. Stay-at-home parents will also be able to take advantage of tax deductions.

Trump, speaking in Aston, Pennsylvania, promised six weeks of paid maternal leave for those who do not receive it through their employers. The program would not apply to fathers. The campaign says that the proposal would be paid for by eliminating fraud in the unemployment insurance program.

“We need working mothers to be fairly compensated for their work, and to have access to affordable, quality child care for their kids,” said Trump.

Trump was introduced by Ivanka. This is Ivanka’s first campaign appearance since introducing her father at the Republican National Convention. Ivanka, who is a mother of three children, has been used by the campaign to paint the Republican presidential nominee in a softer light and to argue that he was an promoter of women in the workplace.

“This must change. As a society we need to create policies that champion all parents, enabling the American family to thrive,” Ivanka Trump said.

Trump was also joined onstage by several Republican women.

The Trump campaign also released a fact sheet for the proposal. Buried near the end of the plan is the detail that same-sex couples would be included in the program. Trump has done outreach to the LGBT community and has pledged to be an advocate for them.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has proposed twelve weeks of paid leave.
