Donald Trump Clinches Nomination

Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination for the Presidency on Thursday after more uncommitted delegates came to support his campaign. That burst of support allowed Trump to cross the 1,237 delegate threshold.

“Here I am watching Hillary fight and she can’t close the deal,” Trump said at a press conference in Bismarck, North Dakota. Trump enjoyed the fact that he secured his party’s nomination while Hillary Clinton struggles to fend off attacks from Senator Bernie Sanders.

There is an added irony to this as political observers thought for months that the Republican nomination would be forced to a brokered convention as Senator Ted Cruz, Governor John Kasich, and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney tried to prevent Trump from securing the nomination. Cruz dropped out after failing to win the Indiana primary, leading Republicans, including the Republican National Committee, to deem Trump the presumptive nominee. Kasich then dropped out shortly thereafter.
Trump is still struggling to unite his party, though. Speaker Paul Ryan has been hesitant to endorse the nominee and told CNN that he does not currently support Trump. Trump also attacked the popular Governor Susana Martinez (R-NM). Martinez is seen as a Hispanic leader within the party. However, Trump did receive the support of his former opponent, Senator Marco Rubio, on Thursday. Rubio also said that he would be open to speaking at the convention in Cleveland.
