Republicans Seize On Individual Mandate As Tax

Yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court saved President Obama’s healthcare law, but gave Republicans new ammo. Chief Justice Roberts wrote in his opinion that the individual mandate is a tax, which Republicans dislike. As do most Americans. Republicans have often campaigned that Obamacare included taxes, but now they have the backing of the Supreme Court. In a tough economy, the last thing most Americans need are taxes, and so the Republicans are arguing that President Obama is giving them more. The individual mandate has never been popular, and a classification as a tax, if left unanswered, will certainly do damage. When Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was asked about this, she said you could call it what you want, but it’s good.
