Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) became the first Republican to push back against Rep. Don Young’s comment that used a derogatory term for Latinos. Sen. Cornyn, a Republican, is up for re-election in Texas, a minority-majority state that still votes Republican. His statement, first reported by Politico, follows:
“Migrant workers come to America looking for opportunity and a way to provide a better life for their families. They do not come to this country to hear ethnic slurs and derogatory language from elected officials. The comments used by Rep. Young [(R-Alaska)] do nothing to elevate our party, political discourse or the millions who come here looking for economic opportunity.”
