Gabby Giffords endorses Hillary Clinton for President

road to the white houseFormer Represenative Gabby Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, have endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. The former Arizona Congresswoman has been a major proponent of gun control in the country following a failed assassination attempt in 2011.

Giffords and Davis founded Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun violence prevention advocacy group, over two years ago in an attempt to stand up and combat pro-gun groups like the National Rifle Association.

“Today, we are proud to have Hillary’s back, and to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her to, once and for all, break the stranglehold the corporate gun lobby has had on American politics — and American families — for so long,” Giffords and Kelly said in the statement.

Recently Clinton has been saying that her opponent, Senator Bernie Sanders, is not as tough on gun control as she is.

“I think he has been consistently refusing to say that he would vote to repeal this absolute immunity from any kind of responsibility or liability,” Clinton said. “It’s the only industry in our country where we have given that kind of carte blanche to do whatever you want to do with no fear of legal consequences.I think that the excuses and efforts by Senator Sanders to avoid responsibility for this vote, which the NRA hailed as the most important in 20 years, points up a clear difference.”

Recently President Obama has also been trying to push gun control legislation forward. He issued an executive order in the hopes of inducing gun restrictions which would eliminate the gun show loophole, which allows consumers to purchase guns from gun shows without background checks or mandatory record of purchase. Obama has said that gun violence prevention will be a major focus of his final year of the Presidency.
