Edward Snowden Charged With Espionage

snowdenNSA leaker Edward Snowden was secretly charged in the Eastern District of Virginia with one of the most serious crimes there is, espionage. The interesting thing about the Eastern District is that that is where Snowden’s former employer, Booz Allen Hamilton, is headquartered and that is where most national security cases are handled. There are other interesting notes about this charging, too. The charge was filed secretly and the only reason we know about it is because it was unsealed. Also, today is Edward Snowden’s birthday. He turns 30.

11The United States has requested that Hong Kong extradite Snowden back to the United States. Hong Kong is where Snowden is believed to be. However, Hong Kong, if they wanted to, may be able to exploit an exception in their extradition treaty with the United States. Espionage cases are often classified as political cases and in the Hong Kong-US treaty there is an exception for political characters. You can be sure than Snowden’s team will bring it up. However, Snowden could attempt to get his case lost up in judicial bureaucracy by appealing the extradition which would drag the process for years experts believe.
