Erica Hill Named Lead Substitute Anchor for CNN

In a memo to staff, HLN head Ken Jautz announced that Erica Hill is moving over to CNN as a national correspondent and lead substitute anchor. Hill, who re-joined HLN/CNN in 2016, has frequently served as a substitute anchor for CNN’s daytime programming.

Hill’s last day will be Friday, April 27 and her first day at CNN will be the following Monday.

A new permanent anchor for On the Story was not announced as the show will have a rotating set of anchors.

Hill was hired away from NBC News with much fanfare as part of Ken Jautz’s plan to move HLN closer to its news roots after efforts to brand the network as the cable news home for crime and then social media. The rebrand remains a work in progress however.

Read the memo:

It’s with mixed emotions that I let you know that Erica Hill is joining CNN as lead fill-in anchor and national correspondent. As you know, Erica has been pulling double-anchor duty on both networks for the past few months—brilliantly, I might add. When it became clear that she fit in seamlessly to so many CNN programs, it made perfect sense to make that her permanent role.

While we’ll miss Erica on HLN, we’re lucky that she’s staying in the family. She’s done an exceptional job since returning to HLN nearly two years ago, including her coverage of the conventions, Las Vegas shooting and Hurricane Irma. Please join me in thanking and congratulating Erica.

On The Story will continue with a rotating slate of anchors and will be produced by the same team.
