President Trump Declines to Attend White House Correspondents Dinner

IMG_0104The White House Correspondents Association has announced that President Donald Trump will not attend this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner. President Trump also declined to attend last year.

As opposed to last year when White House staffers decided not to attend out of “solidarity” with the President, WHCA President Margaret Talev said that the President “will actively encourage members of the executive branch to join us.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will attend the event on behalf of the administration.

The President and Vice President have historically attended the Dinner and the event which brings together members of the media, politicians, and Hollywood celebrities has earned the nickname “nerd prom.” However, the event took on a somber tone last year in light of President Trump’s attacks on the media and subsequent decision to not attend. Several associated parties were cancelled and the dinner itself refocused on freedom of the press. The dinner is a fundraiser for the Association’s scholarships and when they present their annual journalism awards.
