Longtime media reporter Bill Carter has expanded his role at CNN Media, the CNNMoney vertical dedicated to media coverage. Carter has served as a CNN contributor since July of 2015 and is now expanding to be a full-on writer for the network. In Carter’s role as contributor, he mainly appeared on CNN television, oftentimes with Brian Stelter, to talk about media news.
Carter has already penned his first piece at CNN, one regarding the late night friendships.
Carter’s first piece is befitting as he made his name with coverage of the late night wars. Carter has published two books on the topic, The Late Shift and The War for Late Night. Both look at the internal and public competitions for the Tonight Show.
Carter worked at the New York Times for over twenty-fives years, before taking a company buy-out. Carter and Stelter (who leads CNN Media) were two of the most prominent members of The New York Times’s media desk and their departures, along with David Carr’s passing, caused the Times to need to rebuild its media desk.
CNN has been rapidly adding to its media team. Then-Variety analyst Brian Lowry recently jumped to CNN Media as an analyst and Politico media blogger Dylan Byers left for CNN.
