Neil Gorsuch Officially Sworn In As Supreme Court Justice

On Monday, Neil M. Gorsuch was sworn in  as a Supreme Court Justice, taking the place of the late Justice Antonin Scalia who passed away two years ago. Speaking at Gorsuch’s swearing in ceremony, President Trump stated, “Justice Gorsuch, you are now entrusted with the sacred duty of defending our Constitution.”

Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, who served as Gorsuch’s clerk and mentor, swore in Gorsuch at a public ceremony at the White House. Gorsuch had also been sworn in earlier that day at a private ceremony at the Supreme Court.

Gorsuch’s confirmation also made history, as never before has a sitting Supreme Court Justice been on the Court with his former clerk.

“This is a very, very special moment because many years ago, a young Neil Gorsuch started his legal career as a law clerk to Justice Kennedy,” President Trump said. The President also called it “a fitting testament to Justice Kennedy’s impact.”

Justice Gorsuch, commenting on his own confirmation, stated, “I promise you that I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant of the Constitution and laws of this great nation.”

Gorsuch was confirmed in a bitter process in the Senate. Senate Democrats filibustered his nomination after they said he was less than forthcoming on his views. In response, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell invoked the nuclear option to effectively end filibusters for Supreme Court nominees.

Trump singled out the Majority Leader for praise during his remarks, “I especially want to express our gratitude to Sen. Mitch McConnell for all that he did to make this achievement possible.”
