Richmond Times-Dispatch Endorses Gary Johnson

The Richmond Times-Dispatch, the main newspaper in Virginia, endorsed Libertarian presidential nominee and former governor Gary Johnson in a Sunday editorial. The endorsement is a break in tradition for the newspaper as it has exclusively endorsed Republican presidential nominees for the past 36 years.

The editorial blasted the Democratic and Republican nominees, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, writing, “Neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton meets the fundamental moral and professional standards we have every right to expect of an American president.”

The editorial describes Johnson as “a man of good integrity, apparently normal ego and sound ideas.”

The editorial comes as Johnson is struggling to raise his national polling high enough to qualify for the debate stage. Johnson is currently hovering around nine percent and needs to get to 15% nationally. The paper calls Johnson “a legitimate and reasonable contender for the presidency — but only if the voters give him a fair hearing.”

Polling in Virginia puts Johnson around 11%.
