Sen. Joe Manchin Announces 2016 Plans

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced on CBS’s Face the Nation this morning that he would be foregoing a gubernatorial run in 2016. Instead, he will stay in the Senate and run for re-election in 2018.

Manchin had floated the possibility of running for Governor in West Virginia many a times. It would be a return for him, he was in the middle of his second term when he was elected to the Senate in 2010. He was elected in a special election to succeed Senator and President pro Tempore Robert Byrd (D-WV) following the Senator’s death. Manchin said his job as governor was one he “loved very much.”

Manchin has spoken about his displeasure with the Senate on many occasions. He disliked the slow and partisan nature of the chamber where he felt he was unable to get anything done. He had compared this to his time as governor, where he regularly made deals.

Manchin is one of the few moderate members of the Senate left and that has made him a key player. In addition to making many deals, he has become an important vote in attempts to get a majority or filibuster-proof support.
