In Senate, Dueling Wastebooks Continue Senator Coburn’s Legacy

When Senator Coburn (R-OK) retired from the Senate, he challenged his former colleagues to produce their own versions of his Wastebook. The WastebookIn was Senator Coburn’s annual look at his perceived wasteful federal spending. The report was often-lighted and pointed out absurdities filed away in the federal spending. The report also often had a pop culture-related theme.

Two Senators have produced their own versions. Senators Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and James Lankford (R-OK) have both released reports on government spending.

Senator Lankford’s report is caused Federal Fumbles, in reference to the football term. Senator Lankford succeeded Senator Coburn. Senator Lankford’s report contains 100 examples and ideas on how to prevent the wasteful spending from occurring again. For example, the government funded silent Shakespeare performances.

Senator Flake’s report continues with the Wastebook name and references the new Star Wars movie, with Wastebook: The Farce Awakens. This Wastebook also has 100 examples. Flake finds instances of the government studying how less attractive people date more attractive people and promoting tourism to Lebanon, despite a State Department travel warning for the country.
