Mexican President Cancels Visit with President Trump


international affairsMexican President Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted on Thursday that he has cancelled a meeting with American President Donald Trump. He first tweeted, “Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to achieve agreements in favour of both Nations.” He then followed up with, “This morning we have informed the White House that I will not attend the meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with the .”

The announcement comes as President Trump ramps up the execution of his border wall with Mexico while still reiterating that Mexico will end up paying for the wall. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that the wall will cost between $12 and $15 billion. Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to push wall construction forward.

Trump has also indicated he wants to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Pena Nieto in order to renegotiate NAFTA, the 1993 free trade deal.

Trump and Pena Nieto have met in the past however. Trump met with the Mexican President during his presidential campaign.

Mexico is the third highest exporter to the United States while the country is the second highest importer of American goods.
