Edward Snowden Joins Twitter

Following an interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson on the astrophysicist’s podcast, Star Talk, Edward Snowden has joined Twitter.

His account bio says in part that he “used to work for the government. Now I work for the public.” His header image, the wide image at the top of the profile, is stacked newspapers all reporting on the collection of phone data and finding it illegal. Snowden is currently following just one account, his former employer, the National Security Agency. After he joined, he engaged in quick conversation with Tyson and tweeted a picture of him and Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s. At the time of publication, Snowden stood at 750,000 followers. However, 2016 presidential candidate George Pataki (R-NY) is not one of them. Pataki responded to Snowden’s first tweet by calling him a traitor:

Pataki then followed up by calling on Twitter and CEO Jack Dorsey to delete Snowden’s account as Snowden is, in Pataki’s words, a traitor.

Dorsey has not replied to Pataki’s request, although it is unlikely that Dorsey will delete the account. This is especially since he retweeted a tweet from Twitter showing the global response to Snowden joining.
