Gawker Bought at Bankruptcy Auction

Bryan Goldberg, the founder of Bleacher Report and Bustle, has won the website, social media accounts, and archives of Gawker, the infamous news website that shuttered two years ago following a lawsuit from wrestler Hulk Hogan. Hogan could be entitled to up to 45% of the bid as a result of the bankruptcy settlement. Following the trial that ruled in Hogan’s favor, the remainder of the Gawker websites were sold to Univision as the Gizmodo Media Group.

Goldberg won with a bid of $1.35 million.

Goldberg is known for starting the sports news website Bleacher Report which he sold to Turner Broadcasting (the parent company of CNN and TBS) for $175 million in 2012. Goldberg then went onto start Bustle, a website targeted towards female millennials.

The purchase comes days after Univision announced its intention to sell off the Gizmodo Media Group as well as its stake in The Onion’s websites (The Onion, AV Club, ClickHole, and The Takeout).
