Anthony Bourdain, the host of CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, is dead at 61 of suicide. CNN confirmed the news on Friday.

When the future history books of CNN and cable news at large are written, Bourdain will have a spot as the first host of a CNN Original Series. At the time, it was a break in format for cable news which was known for headlines and opinion around the clock. Now most cable news channels have original series of their own.

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown was a critical and ratings success, earning five Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award.

Bourdain quickly became a face of the network and expanded his role at the network with Explore Parts Unknown, a digital component to the show with recipes and long form content.

Bourdain was in France for a new episode of Parts Unknown.

“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain,” CNN said in a statement. “His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”
