Politico Rebuilds Its Media Desk

fourth estate newPolitico announced on Wednesday evening that Michael Calderone, currently the senior media reporter for HuffPost, is rejoining the news organization. Calderone will start at Politico on September 19 and then take over the Morning Media newsletter the following week.

Calderone first joined Politico in 2007 when it was still a journalism start-up and started its media vertical. He then left Politico for Yahoo and then eventually moved to HuffPost before now returning to Politico.

Calderone rejoins Politico as it begins the process of rebuilding its once-strong media news team. When Hadas Gold departed for TKNN, the team was down to just Cristiano Lima and Alex Weprin (who took over the Morning Media newsletter). However with Calderone’s arrival, the team will be up to four, with those three and Jason Schwartz. The outlet is also hiring a media reporter.

As TKNN previously reported of Politico’s media desk, Dylan Byers left for CNN’s own media team. Joe Pompeo went to Vanity Fair’s The Hive. Peter Sterne went to the Freedom of the Press Foundation as a reporter while Kelsey Sutton was moved to Politico’s general politics team before departing to Mic as a media reporter. Jeremy Barr is now at the Hollywood Reporter as a politics-media reporter.

“In his return to Politico, Michael brings not only his sources throughout the industry and ability to break important news, but a commitment to maintain the excellence of our Morning Media newsletter and take it to new heights,” said executive editor Carrie Budoff Brown and editor-at-large Peter Canellos.

A Politico spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
