The Super Bowl is being broadcast on NBC this year and the NBC Universal family of channels is taking advantage of the biggest game of the year. MSNBC, or the self-described Place for Politics, will be dedicating three hours of Friday night to Super Bowl coverage. Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist and Ronan Farrow will all be traveling to Phoenix to cover the event. On Friday, Chris Matthews will host Hardball at the Apollo Education House and he will have the mayors of the two Super Bowl teams’ cities on. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray will be discussing the football game and their respective cities. At 8, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Willie Geist will be on with Morning Joe at Night. The special will run for two hours, preempting All In With Chris Hayes and The Rachel Maddow Show. Halftime performer Katy Perry will be on the program.
In his year-end review, MSNBC President Phil Griffin did speak about diversifying MSNBC’s coverage other than just Washington coverage.

NEW YORK – January 29, 2015 – Today MSNBC announced its plans for live coverage from Super Bowl XLIX. Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist and Ronan Farrow will all head to Phoenix for the weekend.
On Friday, January 30, MSNBC will broadcast “Hardball” at 7 p.m. ET followed by a special two hour edition of “Morning Joe at Night” at 8 p.m. ET live from the Apollo Education House.
Chris Matthews will host the live edition of “Hardball” with guests including Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray talking about the game as well as their respective cities. CEO of Fingerpaint Marketing Ed Mitzen and Access Hollywood’s Kit Hoover will also join Chris to talk about some of the Super Bowl ads and the halftime entertainment.
“Morning Joe at Night” will feature Joe, Mika, and Willie talking to a wide range of guests including Super Bowl Halftime performer Katy Perry, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, journalist Mike Lupica and NBC Sports’ Al Michaels.
Throughout the weekend, MSNBC hosts will also participate in panel discussions and deliver talks from the Apollo Education House.
The Super Bowl will air on NBC at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 1.
