CNN’s Washington bureau chief and SVP, Sam Feist, has announced that Joe Johns has been promoted to Senior Washington Correspondent. He was most recently a Justice Correspondent for the network while also having a role in political coverage. Johns is also often a substitute anchor for The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Johns was a Capitol Hill correspondent for the network previously and is celebrating ten years at the network.

“In recent months, in addition to relying on Joe’s coverage of Crime and Justice, we’ve also leaned on him for coverage of healthcare.gov, the IRS, Hillary Clinton’s political future, the Chris Christie controversy, and the list goes on. It has become clear that with a midterm election campaign and a presidential campaign on the horizon, we will need Joe’s storytelling and reporting in areas that extend far beyond the Justice Department. And Joe Johns is the perfect correspondent to fill this need,” noted Feist.

Jake Tapper currently serves as the network’s Chief Washington Correspondent, a role he received when he joined the network.

TVNewser got a hold of the internal memo announcing the promotion:

We are thrilled to announce that Joe Johns has been promoted to CNN’s Senior Washington Correspondent. In his time at CNN and particularly during his time as our Justice correspondent, Joe has proven to be an outstanding reporter, storyteller, and broadcaster. In recent months, in addition to relying on Joe’s coverage of Crime and Justice, we’ve also leaned on him for coverage of healthcare.gov, the IRS, Hillary Clinton’s political future, the Chris Christie controversy, and the list goes on. It has become clear that with a midterm election campaign and a presidential campaign on the horizon, we will need Joe’s storytelling and reporting in areas that extend far beyond the Justice Department. And Joe Johns is the perfect correspondent to fill this need.

As Joe celebrates his tenth year with CNN this month, please congratulate him on ten fabulous years and on his new assignment.
