Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid Backs Iran Deal

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that he will support President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal. The former Senate Majority Leader is the 27th Senate Democrat to support the deal. Reid’s office says that he will begin a whipping operation to get other Senate Democrats to support the deal. Currently, only two Senate Democrats have announced their opposition, Sens. Chuck Schumer (NY) and Bob Menendez (NJ).”I strongly support this historic agreement and will do everything in my power to ensure that it stands,” said Senator Reid in a statement.

Reid’s support greatly improves the Obama Administration’s political calculus. The White House expects the resolution of disapproval to pass in the House and have majority support in the Senate. However, the Administration is looking to ensure they have enough support to prevent a veto override. A veto override in the Senate requires sixty votes. The Republicans hold the majority with fifty-four Senators. If at least six Democrats oppose the deal, that would hand the opponents a victory.
