President Trump to Meet with Turkish President Erdogan

President Donald Trump will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on May 16, according to a statement from the press secretary.

The statement says that “the two leaders will discuss how to further strengthen our bilateral relationship and deepen our cooperation to confront terrorism in all its forms.”

The announcement of their meeting comes a day after Trump authorized the Pentagon to arm Kurdish militias in Syria as part of the larger ISIS statehood. Turkey, which is opposed to a Kurdish state, blasted the move and Erdogan called on the Administration to revoke the authorization.

However, the two leaders have showed signs of a stronger relationship. Trump  congratulated Erdogan following Turkey’s approval of a constitutional referendum that drastically increased his powers. The referendum’s results have been plagued by accusations of vote fraud.
