Prime Minister Netanyahu Stares Down UN General Assembly for 45 Seconds of Silence

international affairsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continued to rail against the Iran nuclear deal on Thursday. He spoke to the United Nations General Assembly and blasted the member nations for their “utter silence” when it comes to Iran threatening the existence of Israel. He listed off various threats from over the years by Iranian leaders and then criticized the nuclear deal and the international community’s support of it. Netanyahu has been a consistent opponent of the nuclear deal, ever since the nations began negotiating with Iran.

“Seventy years after the murder of six million Jews, Iran’s rulers promise to destroy my country, murder my people,” Netanyahu said. “And the response from this body— the response from nearly every one of the governments represented here— has been absolutely nothing. Utter silence. Deafening silence.”

Then, Netanyahu turned silent. He remained so for forty-five seconds, staring down the fellow members of the General Assembly. Silence filled the room as Netanyahu made his point.

He followed up by pledging to no longer be silent. “As someone who knows that history, I refuse to be silent,” he said. Then he said the Jewish people would no longer be silent.

Netanyahu also continued to describe the nuclear deal as a reward for Iran. He said, “when bad behavior is rewarded, it only gets worse.”
