CNN Announces Original Series for 2019


fourth estate newCNN has announced their slate of Original Series with several new and returning programs set to air on the cable network next year. CNN also quietly announced The 2000s as a documentary series to air this summer. The 2000s is the latest in CNN’s Decades documentary series.

The returning series are Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, and This is Life with Lisa Ling. CNN also announced that new installments of The History of Comedy and Declassified: Untold Stories of American Spies will be coming.

American Dynasties: The Bushes is a new installment in CNN’s new American Dynasties series (American Dynasties: The Kennedys is currently airing). The show, which is the first to focus on the Bush political family, analyzes the Bush family’s complex internal dynamics, fraternal rivalries, influential matriarchs and extreme competitive spirit which drove them to power.

Chasing Life with Sanjay Gupta is a six-part series which follows CNN’s chief medical correspondent around the world as he learns how to live longer and healthier. CNN has been increasingly looking to their roster of personalities and making Original Series out of them, like Love and Sex Around the World with Christiane Amanpour.

Tricky Dick will utilize archive footage to explore former President Richard Nixon’s political career from his start in California to his presidential resignation.

American Style (working title) will look at American fashion through the lens of political, economic, and social history. The show will be produced by Vox Entertainment, a division of Vox Media (which operates several news websites).

Once in a Great City: Detroit 1962-64 looks at Detroit at its arguable high point as Motown dominated culturally and the auto industry economically. This program was originally planned to air during 2018.

Finally, Van Jones will add another piece of programming with The Redemption Project. Each episode will feature a victim or surviving family members meeting with their offender. The show will explore the criminal justice system while analyzing redemption.
