Politico’s Hadas Gold Joining CNN

fourth estate newHadas Gold, a media reporter for Politico, is joining CNN as a reporter based in Washington, but covering Europe. Gold tweeted that she will be covering “European politics, media, & global business.” However, she will not be part of the CNN Media team as a CNN source told TKNN that she will be covering European politics, but she may cover media stories that intersect with European politics periodically.

Gold announced the news in a series of tweets and thanked Politico, “I joined Politico 5 years ago -my first real journalism job. There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude to for giving me a chance.”

The news comes as Politico’s media team, once a machine of breaking news and scoops, has shrunk down to minimal levels. Dylan Byers left for CNN’s media team. Joe Pompeo went to Vanity Fair’s The Hive. Peter Sterne went to the Freedom of the Press Foundation as a reporter while Kelsey Sutton was moved to Politico’s general politics team before departing to Mic as a media reporter. Jeremy Barr is now at the Hollywood Reporter as a politics-media reporter. The two remaining at Politico Media are Cristiano Lima and Alex Weprin. Megan Swiatkowski, a spokesperson for Politico, said that Weprin will take over Politico’s Morning Media newsletter for the short-term. Politico editor Peter Canellos wrote in an internal memo that “[we] look forward to finding a new and equally respected writer to take over our media newsletter.” TKNN obtained the internal memo and it also reveals that Gold’s last day is August 16.

“Hadas is respected throughout the media world for her dogged but always fair-minded pursuit of news scoops. She is one of those reporters who will roll out of bed at any hour of the night or morning to jump on a competitive story,” Canellos wrote.

Ed O’Keefe, the senior vice president in charge of CNN’s premium offerings, said in an internal memo that TKNN obtained that Gold’s “work will appear across CNN Politics, CNNMoney, and CNN writ-large.” Furthermore, Gold will visit the DC bureau, where she will be based, in August before traveling to London to meet her coworkers there. She will then join CNN full-time following Labor Day.
