CNN has fired Kathy Griffin from its annual New Years coverage after a photo surfaced of Griffin holding a severed President Donald Trump head.  Griffin had co-hosted the program since 2007 with Anderson Cooper and the program was a significant ratings success. The show settled into a regular pattern of crazy antics with Griffin playing the crazy to Cooper’s straight man.

CNN tweeted, “CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin to appear on our New Year’s Eve program.” CNN had previously called the photos “disgusting and offensive.”

Griffin apologized for the photos Tuesday night, saying in a video, “I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far.”

Cooper tweeted, “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”

There was widespread condemnation to Griffin’s comment from across the political spectrum. President Trump responded to the photo on Twitter, tweeting,  “Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”

His son, Donald Trump, Jr., targeted CNN in a series of tweets, calling on them to dissociate themselves with Griffin.
